It's not always funny when you get a mail with only 'Oeps' in the text.
But I did laughed hard enough to startle some colleagues.

I get a mail with a spreadsheet attached "can you update the sales code in the item master, replace the values in column A with the vales in column B"
Yes, I can do that with a couple of SQL statements and some cut-n-pasteing. So I do it.
I Reply, "OK, I did the change "
...
5 minutes
...
He mails back : "Heu, you didn't replace where column B was empty, did you?"
...
I reply : "Yes, I did, you asked all and I did all"
...
He mails back : ""Oops

I don't play demanding games or ore highly graphic-intensive programs. Just like most business people. Most integrated graphics solutions are good enough. But I do run intensive database stuff and I do quite some compilations. So I want my CPU and memory to run unburdened by graphics and stuff. So I go for those low end cards.

Nice to see the Lenovo netbooks coming to Europe. A bit princely and entering a full market.
Getting bored with netbooks? This one has an interesting twist. It has an instant on feature which runs Linux even though Windows is installed on the disk. Yes, that's available on some other computers so nothing exceptional. Except the instant-on features are to “check email, browse the Internet, conduct video conferencing, view photos or listen to music” without booting the full OS. Now it just happens that those things are what most users get e netbook for so basically they don't ever have to boot Windows. I think that's a wonderful marketing trick by Microsoft to rack up sales from people who don't need/want windows

Everybody knows I am a fan of mini laptops, netbooks. But that doesn't mean I couldn't appreciate a good full sized one. the best thing here is that the screen is high resolution, not some stretched thing.
Also of note is that Windows Vista comes in 64 bit version. Finally. It is a move that shows up more these days as memory hikes up and over the old 32 bit limit in Windows.

The Transmissive buy out may look as a big marketing move from IBM. Ant it could be used against it's rivals. I think they bought it more to streamline their own internal shop. IBM has a whole series of different hardware and software architecture on the market. And they all need to be maintained wit tons of legacy support. DSL over copper is not going away. It can't compete with cable for speed -though the difference isn't big- and around here it doesn't have the advantage of availability over cable, cable is everywhere. The main reason for people using it was that everybody had telephone long before cable existed and only recently telephone is available on cable so even with cable available copper was still needed. And now there is a possibility (they have a pilot project running) to replace all the old copper with fiber.

Ubunto works with the ARM chips. Does anyone remember the old Acorn Archimedes? Nope, it doesn't come back but the ARM may make a comeback into notebook and maybe desktop computers. It depends a bit on what direction Ubunto goes, if it focuses it's ARM porting for small, handheld devices there won't change much in the market, if it focuses on netbook scale devices ARM might shift up into the PC scene. It won't knock Intel off the PC scene but I can see it being used in a range of ultra portables and fan less always-on boxes. It would certainly be interesting to see a non X86 chip poking up in the PC market.
I wonder whether and how ARMs can multiprocess, a single ARM isn't a high performance chip so you might want to put several of them together for scaling. Would be interesting to get a PC with two arms ^_^ (or s Shiva box ... )

MS Home server is a great idea and a good product. But no one really buys it.
People who use computers but don't care about how they work don't know why they would want a thing like that. Why pay for an extra computer that just sits there while nobody uses it? Extra storage ... they can just plug a cheap USB disk in or use one of those also relative cheap external networkdisks.
And people who know why they need it either know enough and have a Linux box doing the job (better) or have a plain Windows box doing the job (just as good). No need to buy a special box and another MS OS that needs separate patching and fiddling.

Interesting view on the voting mechanism. Rather different from the way we do our voting here.

The good, heroic stuff of open source packages. If you want to be early you got to wrestle with the system.

Intel is finally going with a real four-core chip (in stead of the four-core package in their quads). And they -finally- drop the buss bottleneck. And there is an integrated memory controller. And ... It sounds a lot like yester years AMD design. Of course with some more up to date tricks and features.

OpenBSD doesn't catch as much press as it's worth. It's just stable, reliable, save and ... unsexy.

Ubuntu has a good new release up. A little bit better, faster, fairer, with some new tools to play with. But also with some omissions and drops that may result in a loud howl from long time Linux users. A good step up for starters.

Trying to get that old cathode-ray tube type of burn-in? Nah, just trying to do the e-paper trick with an LCD. But it's not working like that yet.

Century old power station are not going to save the earth. But keeping things in working order is often a better way to preserve them than to banish them into a static museum.

Apple is missing the point. It's understandable that it wants to keep full control of the iPhones it sells. But it's losing out on an opportunity (again).

I suspect the 7 inch model isn't selling as much these days. It started the market up but is now a bit behind the curve. And the difference between the 8.9 and 10 inch version isn't enough to keep both up. I an nonetheless sad to see the slow creep up in size.
Seeing the Linux versions losing out is also sad.

Mac Tablet? Yeah they look good and everybody wants one. But when they are finally available I suspect the sales won't soar. Very few people are willing to pay more for less.

Thin is in. Being less then 5cm thick and weighing just about 11kg you could build it in. I can see it being used as a door to a bookcase.

Choice between comfort and conservation. Most people choose comfort. Screw emission and greenhouse, we want to live near an airport ANd not hear it.
