It's a bit windy but relative warm. And wet of course, we got the wettest March on record. It did dry all up in the afternoon. I wouldn't be surprised April to turn out to be the driest on record. (5°C ^_^ 14°C)

I always liked computers integrated in a keyboard. Liked in a design way of things, not as a user. Certainly not this type of take on a keyboard-computer. It's to big and heavy for a comfortable keyboard. I have used a good keyboard-computer once. But that was a kind of thin-client computer with a late 486 chip and no disk. It was almost indistinguisabe from a standard keyboard and could be used as one. It had a non-standard multi-head cable with VGA and power and serial and parallel all combined with additional network, serial and ps2 ports on the side of the keyboard. Lovely. But sadly not coffee-proof.
I doubt this one is coffee-proof either. And while it looks interesting it doesn't look usable. Well, usable and practical enough to carry into a LAN-party but for regular daily use it's to fat and heavy, with to many cables attached and pushing it around on the desk those fans are likely to blow your papers and postit notes all over the place.
Nope, nice design-effort but not a toy for me.

I love it. Really. Fresh snow on the roads is beautiful. And fun for driving.
OK, not fun when there is traffic and the roads get clogged up with stoopip drivers that think snow beside the road means first gear all the way. But I drive off to work at 06:15 and there is no traffic then. Almost none. In quite some places I am the first driver, laying tracks in the virgin snow. There are a couple of dangerous points but I know these. Like the old bridge over the railroad, guaranteed packed with snow and hard-frozen at that, with luck -bad sometimes- you can slide down the whole way. Or the sharp turn at the buss stop, even on dry days you can spin there.
After some sun during the morning we get more snow at noon. but it doesn't stick, the roads are all clear. (-2°C ^_^ 14°C)

Backup. basically it works the same as on the old machine. But it's a little different.
There are effectively 2 drives. Which is good cause the i5 is split into two partitions. One for the production and one for the Notes server. Now each partition has it's own drive.
There are also 48 slots for tapes in the tape library. One of those (top-right, 48) is reserved for the cleaning tape. Because there are so many slots moving a magazine takes a long time cause each slot is physically checked every time (yep the stupid box check left and right even though it only allows the moving of one side at a time).

It is strange that the MS Zune hasn't shown up in Europe. Staged releases, with devices coming out in the US or japan first and reaching Europe last, are common. But usually it's just a case of months. Not, as with this Zune a case of years. I suppose MS is selling the Zune in the US based more on it's brand name than on it's qualities and in Europe the MS brand name is far less strong. Not strong enough probably to propulse Zune sales. Or MS is just, sensibly, waiting for Release-3.

Yes, it's the thirteenth.
Tonight one (or two) of the airco units in the server room went down. Some time later servers started to struggle. This morning a good 10% was down. So already over heated servers get overloaded as well. Oh dear.

OK, we're on the new system. Lots of extra disk space, a lot faster processing, heaps of internal memory and nice blinking black lights. The problem is that all the extra disks are external disk. Quite fast disks and with a fast optical connection but still, a fair bit slower than a set of internal disks. So the performance is quite good but not as big a step forward as hoped for. I mean the box runs about three times as fast, on a next generation processor, with almost three times the memory and more than three times the disk volume. And it feels about ... 15% faster ... Oops.

We just switched over to a new machine. Moving everything over from one AS400 to another.
Everything went well. But of course not everything has been tested on the new box. In theory nothing should go wrong but as a precaution I came in a bit earlier to make sure everything actually runs. The first shift starts at 06:00 so I hobbled into work at 05:50. Of course everything works fine. Except the printers, the first time a print queue is used it gives a system message. So I got a bunch of those. An a bunch of users with forgotten passwords (everybody who changed his password during last week). And a couple of minor mishaps.
So I got in extra early but I didn't actually get more done than usual. *damn*

And the RIAA will need some deep thinking about NIN success and profit with it's unprotected music distribution. They will also have to come up with a good explanation of why major labels are needed.

The RIAA is also struggling in another case. A court case where it refused to provide the evidence needed for a conclusion. Of course showing the evidence would prove it's gained illegally and that might undermine it's whole sue-the-customer campaign.

Weather - -

When a cold front strikes you get fun on the roads. It was nice and warm yesterday. Till the front struck. First signs were heaps of snow and sleet and cold air. Followed by clear night skies. So first you throw very cold water on the ground to cool it down and then you blow freezing cold air over it. Guaranteed ice patches. Then in the morning you let a bunch of crazy drivers (are there other?) loose on that and you got news bulletins that get extra long. (-3°C ^_^ 8°C)

It's intended (though not priced) as a second-phone that much is clear. So all the blattering about lacking features is not well placed. Also admiring it because it's small and then lamenting it is to small doesn't strike a good pose either.

All quiet. And wet. We didn't get any real hard shower but it kept raining all trough the night. Just perfect to swim to work in the morning.
Oops. It just started to snow. Hard. In about an hour my car was covered in 15 cm of snow. But it was weird really just a couple of kilometers down the road there was no snow at all. (5°C ^_^ 15°C)

Dear Management.

I, the penis, request a salary-raise for these noted reasons :

  • I perform strenuous physical labour.
  • I have to work at great depths
  • I always have to go in head-first
  • I don't get free on weekends nor holidays
  • I always have to work in a wet environment
  • I am not payed for over-work
  • I have to work in dark and badly ventilated spaces
  • I have to work in a hot environment
  • My work puts me at risk of infectious diseases

Kind regards,
Mister Penis

Dear Penis.

We received you request for a wage-raise. After studying the noted reasons and considering your performance and current situation we decided to decline your request. Our decision is based on the following reasons :

  • You never work a full 8 hour shift.
  • After short periods of labour you gave a tendency to fall a sleep during working hours.
  • You often don't follow the orders from you management team
  • You often leave your assigned work place and work in other unauthorised places
  • You seldom take initiative, extra stimulus and preassure is needed to get you to start your work.
  • When you do take initiative it is usually not in an appropriate place and manner.
  • You always leave your workplace in an untidy and messy state.
  • You never take security measures, management for example often has to force protective clothing on you
  • You are never prepared to run double shifts
  • You more often then not get ready and out before your work is actually done.
  • And lastly, we notice you always show up for work carrying two suspicious bags

Kind Regards,
The management team.

We had a leap year bug as well in our in-house programs. Unlike MS though I solved it, in several programs within two days, not 25+ years.

the Fujitsu P1620 looks like a candidate for me. The screen is bigger and better than the EeePC one but still small enough for the portability hot-spot. And there is plenty of storage and power in it. Just the battery seems to be a but under sized. And the price over-sized.

Atom is back. Well, it's something completely different from the old late seventies Atom computers of course. It does look like a killer chip for small computers. Walking right up to the ARM and other embedded processors. It also is a possible killer for the VIA cpu range.

There is a rich man. Or a fool. Suing Apple for providing caller)ID functions in it's iPhone is a smart move. But all known phones and phone systems provide that function. So either everybody is paying him already and than Apple was foolish to refuse. Or no one pays and then the man is a fool to sue in a guaranteed to loose case (unless his family is made up of lawyers that all benefit from cases like this.

Just helping our buddies. And actually Vista will run on those under powered embedded graphics. Not fast but it runs. And it helped MS to sell Vista to cheaper boxes, cause with an expensive but capable box there is no room left in the budget for an expensive Vista licence.

And then, a year to late they go cutting the Vista price so there is enough left to bump up the graphics in your box.

The storm has gone but the weather gods remain nervous. So we get perfect wind-still spells and sudden blasts of wind, hard wind. It's generally grey but gaps with bright, blinding sunlight fly by. Often followed by a bout of rain, sometimes hesitant coming down with just a few fat drops, sometimes in a veritable shower but neither lasts long. (5°C ^_^ 14°C)

We had some strong winds yesterday. And a very real storm at night. Passing over on it's way trough Europe. We typically get one tornado every fifty years or so. Tonight several touched down.
That was tonight. Now it's still windy and rainy but both intermittant. And there is a bit of sun as well. (5°C ^_^ 14°C)
