It's all still wet but nothing new is coming down so it might just turn out to be a good day. (4°C ^_^ 20°C)

Trying to predict the 'next wave' of interest. Interesting maybe but it's bound to be a very small wave if not a mere ripple.

The home network. How long has X-10 power-control been around? I had expected that, some 10 or 20 years ago that type of signaling would evolve far enough to do more than switch devices on and off. But networking is still not really working.

Innovative research indeed. Now show me someone who didn't know or suspect that pets are good against developing allergies? Well, unless you are allergic to pets of course ^_^

Small portables are springing up all over the place. And I like the VIA reference but I would expect them, being less advanced than the Asus, to be cheaper.

Intel is getting (back) into Cray. I think it remarkable though that they do so with the Xeon line. Yes that are very good processors but wasn't the Itanium not positioned to be the better chip? Wasn't the Xeon brand a stop-gap job untill the Itanium would take over?

MS is stopping it's spot-watch line. Which is a pity I think. A watch is a great place to put and add functions. I think about the MP3 watch I have, that is an under powered cheap Chinese thing but it is simple and easy.

I love small things. Especially if they come in black. And silent running is also high on my wish list.
But Lenovo did cut in a couple of odd choices and provided no expansion. I think it looks a good choice for an office where silent low power boxes are desirable. But they have to spec it up a bit before it becomes competitive.. Or price it down. It reminds me of the IBM boxes that are it's parents and grandparents. Nice and good quality but expensive and under powered. But Lenovo is not in a position to extract a premium for it's brand.

And fresh from the oven, the EeePc 900. With it's slighty larger and higher resolution screen it jumps from a nice on the side toy, to fully usable box. The 20GB storage also helps here even though a real disk would be helpful. And a bigger battery is also on the wish list. Also distracting is the serious price-hike, expectable with the bigger SSD and better screen, which pumps it from a buy-first see if it's usable-later to a think-first buy later.
To me the only distraction is the battery. Anything less than 4 hours is a disappointment while I ideally want an 8 hours runtime. Well, actually I want more than 8 hours. I want a portable that works a bit like my old Psion 3a.. That ran for a month or longer, depending on use, on a couple of standard AA batteries. I know it's a bit unrealistic for a full scale notebook but still ...
Sure that Psion was not a portable but a pocketable one with a 40x16 character (graphics 320x120) mono screen and no backlight. And it wasn't a powerhouse (8086-clone at 4Mh + 512Kb) not even when I got it 1991. But I kept it because it never crashed and I never had to look for a power outlet.

500GB external drives give me the creeps. Yes, it's rugged and will survive some abuse. But 500GB is a lot of data to be lost or mislay. Or stolen.. And with a USB interface it's to slow to backup.

A mystery buy. Apple has often hinted it wanted a foot in the processor market but it never got in for real. It did get involved, like getting a stake in Motorola during the PowerPC era, but it never owned a full scale operation. And by going into bed with Intel it has a access to the best and cheapest chips available with all possible performance levels. Yet now it buys a chip shop.
Is it going back into the Power line of processors? Seeking better ARMs?
It remains a mystery. I suppose there is a strong control-factor at play here. With Motorola and it's ARM suppliers, heck even with IBM it was one of if not the biggest customer and thus in a position to influence them. It could force the development in one way or another. with Intel it has access to the biggest supplier, with the best process technology and resources but it is just one of the clients and not in a position to push development. At best it can ask for changes and suggest directions. And if Intel actually takes note and implements one of the proposals it becomes automatically available to the whole world so there is no competitive advantage.
So it buys a chip developer to play. ( http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/04/23/apple_buys_pa_semi/ )

Yes, I remember the Foleo. It was a bit expensive. But it also was dropped on a cold market in the US. Nobody there was waiting for a small notebook like this. The only thing happening was sizes going up from 15 to 17 and 19 inch screen, disk breaking out of the 40/80GB range. Bigger is better ruled in the US, still does to a point. Launching a mini portable in that type of market is hard. Especially if you don't have some specific feature to break open a new segment. Add to that that Palm was in trouble already so it didn't have the market stamina to hold on and keep pushing.
It's a bit like the old Psion Series-7. A very desirable ultra portable product with great potential. But over priced and undermarketted, by a company that was sinking.
Asus had it a bit easier as they launched at the right time on the Japanese market which is much more receptive to miniature novelties. And they picked a better price point.

I think we have a good drive here. Oh I know most people want several TeraByte in their comp and will think a 300GB is not worth looking at. And of course those people want to have fast drives, so they buy relative fast disks ... and then hook them to their computer via a 100Mbps network or -dear god- an USB-2 link. I think it's ideal though, (well, almost ideal, 15.000rpm would be better) add some very fast disk locally and put slower bulk storage online. The same principle used in memory and cache.

Next step, 32nm is coming to the stage. I am afraid the progress in chip development is going to fast. Well, I like the progress, faster smaller and cooler chips are good. Linux is finally gaining market traction. Not because it's better than Windows. If that was the reason we would all be using Linux now with Windows being just a historic bootnoote. Nope. It's gaining cause it's being pre-installed. 90% of computer users don't buy, much less install, an operating system. They buy a computer that works right out of the box. They only install extra software (and games).
It's much like cars. People but cars with wheels and windows on them so they can ride the moment the get the keys. Later they may add a radio, or spoilers or other stuff.
MS know that full well. That's why it has always cut deals with PC producers. Putting Windows on all boxes and adding other programs. Having MS Office installed with a 60day-free period is great. You hook users into using it and make it easy to register and upgrade later. Much simpler than going out and buy a box with disks and -oh horror- manuals. But they shot themselves in the foot (ps the MS-feet are riddles with holes) by trusting the old model where people buy expensive new computers. One of the main reasons PC vendors were eager to get in bed with MS was that they could sell ever faster new boxes even before the old boxes the users had were worn out.
But now there is a bit of an economic down turn (crisis say some) en people want cheaper boxes. So they buy cheaper lower capability boxes. And Windows doesn't run on those.

These Suns are definitely not intended for your average game box. Unless high tread counts are your game.

A low power counter offensive by AMD was to be expected. But it's just targeted at the low power side, not at the very or ultra low where Intel's efforts are now being directed.

Finally the AMD Barcelonas hit the market. Just about a year later than expected. Which is curious cause AMD had the best cards to move from single core to two core and four core or even eight core chips cause the original K8 core was build for working in parallel with other cores. Let's hope they come up with some really new stuff soon. And deliver on plan.

When Dell jumps in you know the super-portable market has been broken open. They wouldn't take a risk (or build some innovative product).

It's overcast but dry. Well there was a bit of sun in the afternoon and the overcasting clouds are bright white in stead of the usual grey. (3°C ^_^ 17°C)

When do you notice things are going in the wrong direction?
You leave after 11h at work. And feel guilty for leaving early.
Yep, first time in seven or eight weeks that I do not stay over 12 hours on the job and it actually felt weird not leaving as last man. Not locking up the office. Yes, I am usually the first one in and the last one out. Today I wasn't. First in still, there is only one who sometimes beats me by a couple of minutes. On days when he got to tend his kids after work so he has to leave early.
So I get in at 07:05. And at 18:45 I am thinking up apologies for leaving 'early'
And the stupidity of it only slowly seeped in on my way home.
But still. I love the job.

IBM is still playing the Gigahertz race while all the other players have left the field. But then a 5GHz Power chip is impressive. I am pretty sure the price will be impressive to ^_^

There doesn't seem to be a big success looming for Montalvo. Even if it gets it's chip working and ready. But the idea of asymmetric cores is not a bad one. The idea of Sun buying the company seems crazy. Unless you consider the possibility of hooking an x86 core into a Spark ship.

The EeePC broke open a market. Now the big boys jump in. And it looks interesting, mainly the big disk option. Just waiting for a real review.

Powerplay. 2.
The power went out a couple of times again. After an hour crawling under desks the problem was eventually tracked down to a faulty extension-distribution block. Just a crown in our fantastic electrical system.

Support calls did come in all the time though so I had to log and solve them without computer. Rather tricky. Especially seeing that there was a really big problem with stock moving around without being tracked. They were still cleaning up the mess in the evening.

Weather - -

It's dry and clear in the morning. with just a light touch of frost. My car is clear as I get in but by the time I stop at the newspaper shop there is a thin layer of ice on the wind screen. Easily wiped off though. (4°C ^_^ 13°C)

Wurk - -

Powerplay.
As in playing with the power supply. There was a short somewhere in the building so the fuses blow. And someone resets them. but doesn't remove the short circuit. Well, it probably isn't a real short but an overload. Cause resetting solved the problem. For ten minutes. Resetting again solves it for 15 minutes. Third time lucky ... lasts for half an hour. Fun.

Encrypting your tapes and external storage is good. From a security point of view. But it might cause problems. Cause there is no guarantee that you can use yesterday's backup on a new box. Unless it's the same brand and series.

They are trying to kill me.
I think I had about one hour to actually do something today. The other almost 11 hours were spent resurrecting deleted records, finding missing moves, linking, relinking, unlinking orders, checking, holding and correcting precomposings, etc. I usually start the debugger three or four times a day on the production machine to find out what the real problem is or to perform some odd illegal stuff. Today I was at one moment debugging in five different session at the same time and I almost constantly was hopping in and out of the debugger
Normally when the phone rings I put on my headphone, pick up the phone, handle the problem, hang up and put off my headphone. today I have had the headphone on for hours on end. So now I have one hot red and sore ear -it's a single-side phone-

Well, when the new product doesn't sell, you keep selling the old one. As long as money comes in it's OK. And keeping Linux out of user's hands is worth something to. Not worth enough to fix Vista. Cause that's un-fixable of course.

Intel's focus on low power chips is interesting. Part because those chips are great. I love a return to fan-less computing. Part because it seems Intel is leaving the big server chips in a dead-end, game for other companies to play. Of course they aren't dropping out. I suppose we will see some interesting moves soon when they apply some of the low power stuff to the top of the line.
