1999-11-22     Monday

It was snowing when I started out. Halfway to Venlo it stopped. While it freezes (-1) the snow still melts on the roads so there is no problem driving.

I started a new program for address maintenance.

Dave is back. And he reports something strange : Late last week I had a Mac go completely goofy. Most software worked just fine. Word 98 would act OK, ... Programs that work fine! Goofy indeed, but then it is on a Mac so what'd you expect :-)

My father's new lens is fitted. Apparently without problems so he should be home tomorrow.

1999-11-23    Tuesday

The rain or rather the drizzle, which started yesterday evening is still falling. And kept falling the whole day. The result is a good cloud cover keeping the temperature rather fixed, 4C at 5h45, rising to 6C at 13h00.

I finished the address maintenance program. I added features that are not (yet) needed but that may come in handy. The intention was to have TS2000 call my program to update a single field (changing a flag from 0 to 1 or back). After the change I should call the OCS standard maintenance routine to handle triggers. What I did is build it so that any field can be changed and even more than one field can be changed at a time. Essentially, all the needed changes are passed in a string and I parse that. Ronny can test that tomorrow.

Peter is writing specifications for the 7.9 version so maybe I can start tomorrow on that.

My father is home. And he can read again. It all went unexpectedly smooth, so much so that he intends to have his other eye checked as well. Last week he was very much afraid to go.

I have been meddling with the layout again (double Monday). And I changed a lot of the GIF references on the non-daynote pages (not posted yet).
Things are moving again, slow but steady.

1999-11-24     Wednesday

7C in the morning, at noon and in the evening. Overcast but dry in the morning, at noon and ...
Nicely boring weather.

Ronny tested the address maintenance function. We solved a few problems and changed the architecture to make it language and code-page independent.

Peter is still at work on specs for 7.9. The database changes should be ready by Monday. Because there are some interfacing systems like TeleSales that have problems with changes in the database all the changes from all the modules must be applied in one action.
Well that is the intention.

Last night, at about 2h00 I woke up with tooth ache and I couldn't get to sleep again. This was not unexpected, the dentist had given me a box of pills especially for this. Only, you should only take them after a meal. I took one after breakfast and about two hours later the pain was almost gone. I will take another one this evening to make sure I get some sleep. The problem, I think is that the temporal filling has sunk in a bit and thus is pressing down again.
Tomorrow I go to the dentist again to replace the temporal filling with either a new temporal one, if the nerve isn't in a good enough condition, or a permanent one if all is good.

I am still working on the burned GIFs. I converted all my GIFs into PNGs but of course all the references must be changed as well. Originally I had kept the GIFs available, in case ... . However I couldn't see which images were pointing to the correct format from within my browser. I updated all in the daynote pages but I forgot the other directories. Later I deleted all the GIFs and suddenly about half my images became invisible. On Harper, my main system, I have got everything sorted out. At last.

Expect an update this weekend.
If I survive that long :-)

1999-11-25     Thursday

7C in the morning, at noon and in the evening. Overcast but dry in the morning, at noon and ...
Nicely boring weather.
Well we did actually get some drizzle in the evening, just to prove it wasn't an exact copy of yesterday.

I took half a day off for the dentist. The intention was to put the permanent filling in but as the tooth, or rather the nerve under it was still sensitive he just cleaned out the hole and applied a new temporal filling. If things are all right I get the permanent filling tomorrow evening.
I am not very positive about it because despite the cleaning the tooth bothered me the whole day.

I had a sort of unproductive afternoon at work. Just a few assists to Peter and a discussion with Theo. Peter will be leaving the OMSI-3 and TeleSales project and Theo should take over. Until now however he has been too busy with another project.

The Americans are celebrating Thanks Giving. Result is that a lot of the otherwise decidedly un-serious daynoters suddenly show their 'other' side. With philosophic considerations and some deep existentialist thoughts.
Today is not a holiday in Belgium. Are we not thankful? Well, not more so than on other days.

1999-11-26     Friday

7C in the morning, at noon and in the evening. Overcast but dry in the morning, at noon and ...
Nicely boring weather.
If this sounds like lazy copy and paste weather that is OK because it is. Apart from the drizzle we had three identical days.

I solved a database problem for TeleSales. And I helped Ronny guide Theo around. The problem is that Ronny doesn't have the patience to explain things, he is a 100% Progress man and explaining something to a non-Progress person is difficult. I have a reasonably broad view on the issues at hand so I often have to intervene to prevent heating up of the arguments. Now with Theo fresh on the project and him being required to make a demonstration for the higher management ( a 'fund raising' exercise) and with the new version of Progress that Ronny must install and test out ASAP we have quite some potential for explosions.

I went from work directly to the dentist. He removed the temporal filling, cleaned out the hole and filled it up again. Next Friday I go for (hopefully) the last visit.

Just as well I don't live in the US of A. I don't like turkey. They all seem to suffer from overfeeding on these noisy troublesome birds.

Something weird is going on. Dr Keyboard is having updates daily this week. And now he is buying beer. And he lets Mrs K do the cooking. And he is suffering from stress. All Daynoter-symptoms, so he is turning into a real one <g>

Tom asks if he should add two extra members to the Gang. Both Jim and Dan are welcomed by all. I remarked that Doc Jim was on the right way to become a daynoter but that I missed the 'most recent' from Dan's page.
Can't have a daynoter without it, now can we?
As a final answer in a mail Ping-Pong with Tom he said this:

Svenson,
OK. As suspect I haven't had any detractors yet.
I'll pass your comments on to Dan when appropriate <g>.
I take it you've accepted the new position of "format cop"?
/tom
Me ? A cop!? I don't think I can accept that. Cops are government agents and we, the Gang, don't need no government nothings. (Unless Bob would volunteer). Maybe, just maybe we could accept a format warden, in the style of a game warden or a traffic warden. But cops, no. We are such a nice group that we don't need cops, we can just flame and whip our fellow Gang-sters into compliance <g>

<g> didn't get a connection yesterday. The Euronet line was busy all evening and the Free Gates password server wouldn't let me in. So check yesterday, if you're still interested.

1999-11-27     Saturday

7C in the morning, at noon and in the evening. Overcast and rainy in the morning, at noon and ...
Nicely boring weather. But I hope you did spot the difference.

After shopping I finished off dinner. Mostly on Saturday Susan prepares it and then I cook it while she gets my father from hospital.

The rest of the day was spent at domestic chores.

1999-11-28     Sunday

The temperature has risen to about 10C but the sky remains closed with a tad more wind

After running and breakfast, I settled down ... and woke up just in time for lunch. Seems I missed some sleep this week. At the cost of a Sunday cause I was all but fit in the afternoon as well.

I will have to work overtime tomorrow to get the database changes compiled. The problem is that all the file changes must be applied at once and the all the programs must be compiled. During that action no one can continue working. To minimize the interruption we will start at about 17h00 and aim for finishing at 21h00.
Taking that into account I don't expect to post tomorrow.
