1999-01-18, Monday

AS/400 is out. Disks were being swapped and then one of the new disks crashed. The problem isn't expected to get soved before this evening.

I build out the "To Do" page so I can e-Mail URLs to other people, like Marleen, if I want to get assistance from them. This doesn't work using Pegassus Mail because PMail doesn't recognise the strings as URLs. Mail in Netscape does recognise them so the sysntax is correct.

Springer-items were not considdered while building Telesales 2000. Now the SPRING file must be included into Progress (synchronise). Afterwards program functionality must be added.

My brother was home, painting steel supports. No Linux.

1999-01-19, Tuesday

I got a call from NVM (Wim Van De Berg) about CS. There was a message waiting while processing the NS file in qbatch (csuserp7 job) while another job from the same user was running (receiver in qsnads). A first call was made to Jos Gielens (gie@oce.nl). He advised to answer 'retry' to the message or cancel the job. The receiver job itself was canceled while the submitted was left to run and eventualy finish. The solution is of cource to stop CS and start it again. Stopping after the job has been canceled will not work of cource but it does clear the CSMASTER data area. The message-waiting problem, a file-locking situation on the RCVNETF command in ctl001cl and cvc001cl, seems to crop-up once every few months when processing NS messages but is unrepeatable in a test environment.

A solution could be to put an ALCOBJ in cvc001cl just before doing the rcvnetf or trap a few more explicit messages in the monmsg instruction after the rcvnetf. One should find out who is locking that file and solve it there by making the lock on the member level iso on file level.

Father got a diskette with files in MS Word format but he uses PordPerfect (6) and he cannot read them. WP6 is deffinitel behind the times so I tried using WordPro from Smartsuite 97 which I know to read MS Word file. This didn't work, these .DOC files are deffinitively wierd. Even Wordpad cannot show some reasonable formatting. I'll try to install Office97.

Illegal copies are not good. The Office97 CD I had lying around was a self-made copy, not from the original but from another copy. I had written down the 'key' as is was writen on the source disk. Either I made a mistake or the previous copier made a mistake but the installation doesn't accept the key.
Next try was installing Staroffice 5. I got this on CD from Mensys, mainly intended for use on Linux and/or OS/2 but the Win95 version was included. Even though this is free ware (you don't have to pay) it demands a registration-key. This is only available from their Netsite so I'll have to wait till tomorrow.

I just picked up the install key for Staroffice from the web and installed it on Yaku. StarOffice will read the files but it doesn't write in WP format. So I copied the stuff to my work-pc and converted using MS Office 97. There are 2 files tha even MS cannot convert into something else, not in WP5, not in RTF, not even in MSWord6 format!! Only in .TXT !! I'll just print them out.

Copying a music CD using only the CD writer is posible (I did it today) by writing track images to the harddisk, then swapping the CDs and then writing. Peace of cake.
But one of the original CDs has a problem and the copier simply stops on the sixth track, consistently.

This evening not much activity, reading 'Splinter' (trans 'The mote in Gods eye') from Pournelle&Niven.

The Mandrake distribution of Linux seems th have drivers for the Millenium G200 AGP card, and they have a CD-image on their FTP site. It is 550MB though so I cannot pick it up on floppies or even Zips. Forget it for the moment. Back to work.

Marleen didn't react to the mail I sent (2 days ago and yesterday) because "if it is a real problem, he will come directly". Tststs. And I just sent mail to prevent interupting her so that she can check and advice me when she sees time. I did go and got some advice.
See Locking and truncating for the situtation.

1999-01-19, Friday

No downloads tried, it takes to long and for Linux it's not clear (to me) what I actualy need.

Handling of translations in Progress took quite some time, following over on Ronny's screen. This is not realy productive. I think I'll not follow the translation activities as close as this. SPRING file, for springer items, was added to the Progress environment. Mainly done by Wilbert while I sat beside him. I am following a lot and learning a lot but I'm afraid not enough sticks. I must get back to taking notes.

Birthday of my father
Connected the slide-scanner, a Nicon Coolscan 20LS, and installed the drivers. Because I didn't find a cable with the correct connectors (mini-db50 to cent50) I connected with the cable from the Plextor CD drive with a convertor plug. Success on first try! We played the whole evening with it.

I did not go running, father up and to hospital means Suz is up also which means the kitchen is full of smoke. I'll run on Sunday from now on.

I found the right SCSI cable for the scanner at Exell. They had it custom made for them because they needed about 5 pieces of it and nobody has such cables in the standard assortment. This is a non-shielded cable which, being morre flexible, is easier to install. Connection works beautifull. I played with the scanner till midday.

Most of the rest of the day spent on chores and magazines. I am still about 5 magazines behing!

Running. My leg is better but not yet in good condition, it tires early. It feels good enough to take up the normal once-a-week scedule. At this rate I am back at 10Km by next autumn.

Most of the day spent at cataloging what is installed and in store.
