Grey low clouds with silver lined gaps producing a beautiful marbled effect. Not at all the warm weather we have had ( barely 10°C ).

The correction program is finished, compiled and passes the first test. It runs. Next is checking if it not only does what it's instructed to do but also if that corrects the problem.

TeleSales has long finished the release release-1 stage and is reaching the end of release-2 stage in the software life cycle.

A lot of functions are built using dialogue boxes, ex where the user must fill in an address he can prompt for a selection, getting a dialogue box. Most of these boxes (already) contain far more information than needed because each designer and each opco wants specific data displayed and the program must satisfy all tastes (sound familiar?).
The question coming up now is to be able to add and modify the data on these dialogue boxes. In effect the users want to be able to maintain everything everywhere. Using Progress and ProShield the whole TeleSales application has basically become one huge single tasking tangle of routines. If we build in that maintain everything everywhere idea users are going to lose their way and it will become totally impossible to maintain.
Splitting up is not really an option because each split-off part would require its own database connection via the server and that would multiply the number of required licences (read multiplying the cost).

No Football today (nor tomorrow for that matter)

And it is time for filling in the TAX papers. Oh dear.

The temperature nose dived further, to 4°C producing a misty morning. With no clouds to be spotted however the mist soon got displaced by a bright sunny day.

I got a rather unproductive day. And I have nobody (but me) to blame for it.
Well I did have two crashes of Win95 on the PC but that is just one more than usual. Until about two months ago I had to reboot my PC only once a week, well maybe not even that but I did shut it down for the weekend. Since Progress version-9 got installed I have to boot at least once a day. After about 8 hours working it suddenly starts to slow down and if I don't reboot then it will either lock up solid or do an automatic boot or starts to throw BSODs or resource-is-low messages (win16 style) at me. It does this even if I don't start anything from Progress itself so I guess some DLL got replaced by a buggy one when we installed.

Yesterday, about noon the mail server (Exchange) at Oce started to misbehave.
Most people are using Outlook 98 and typically start that up in the morning and close it down in the evening. They did not notice anything wrong. I use Netscape as mail client and I don't keep Outlook open. I didn't receive any outside mail after 8h00 but that is not uncommon and internal mail had no problem. At noon Netscape crashed, nothing spectacular, it does that sometimes and, unlike MS IE it doesn't take the rest of Windows down so I ca simply start Netscape again. After restarting however I could no longer send or receive mail. I always got a message that the server couldn't be reached or that my settings were wrong. I tried to start Outlook bud that couldn't connect to the server either. Ronny, who still had Outlook open since the morning could still send mail. Just before he went home he tried to close and reopen Outlook and he couldn't reach the server either.
This morning everything worked again as it should, I just got an overflowing inbox <g>

At home my brother had scribbled a note (paper) on my desk about mail from someone he didn't know (Moshe Bar) that had popped up in his inbox. Normally I send mail from Netscape, for him I had configured Outlook Express to keep mail a bit separate. I did send a mail to Moshe some time ago from Outlook Express without thinking about it. Of course, when Moshe hit the reply button the mail got replied to the sending address (peter at -this-domain- ) and dropped into his mail folder. So I had to explain how addressing mail works. Not that I am an expert in it (yet).
What I found disconcerting is that I was explaining it in Dutch but that I automatically switched to English halfway trough and only noticed that when I reread the text. I guess I am using English too much lately, maybe I should write these daynotes in Dutch. ?.
I forced myself to rewrite the lot in Dutch.

If you don't see anything here tomorrow today don't fear. All is well with me.
It's just that the TAX forms must be in on the 30th at least. And I haven't started yet ...

Hmm, did I say all is well with me??      Not so sure about that. <SG>   ( Sarcastic grin )

Dry, cool (8C) and turning sunny and not too warm. With just a sprinkling of rain in the evening, not enough for the garden, only sufficient really for the weeds :~{

More discussing and looking up and explaining than coding and testing at work.

Tom changed over from iTool to his own server, Hydras. After a long and winding road the DNS changeover seems to have traveled the world. While changing from server to server he split up his site in sub domains.

His e-mail is unchanged.

While talking about Tom, could this be his next upgrade? (maybe not, it doesn't run Linux). <BG>

Football yesterday, semi finals 1.

France - Portugal : 2 - 1
I only saw fragments but it was an entertaining match. After the regular 90 minutes it was 1 - 1. By the end of the second extension (almost the 120ed minute the French got a penalty due to a hands. They converted it and you could see the Portuguese die.

Football today, semi finals 2.

the Netherlands - Italy : 0 - 0, 3 - 1
It started at 18h00 so I missed the first time and the biggest part of the second time. The Italians, reduced to 10 (red card after about half an hour) kept a closed defense and the Dutch, while trying never broke trough. They even missed two penalties. After regular time it was still 0 - 0 and after the extra times it was still 0 - 0 . Even with a man more than the Italians, some of whom were barely able to stand, the Dutch couldn't win. Not only did they miss the two penalties during the game they also missed three out of four penalties in the end. The Italians missed only one.

Also Yestrday, I did get the TAX papers done.

9°C Lots of clouds in the morning creating beautiful black and red bands at sunrise. Gradually the clouds disappear.

I have been busy all day. But don't ask what I did.

We had baked dab with mushrooms and a Spanish white wine (Homenaje).

Some strong rain cooling down the morning (8°C) but after 8h00 it stops raining and gets warm and sunny.

Shopping. While I am in the shop (for a few Zip disks which he doesn't have in stock) Steven informs me that he is (going to) transfer my site over to a server in the Netherlands. The servers there have a higher bandwidth and are a few hops closer to home which is all right by me. Maybe it will take a few milliseconds longer for people from America which may be canceled out by the higher bandwidth. The servers used to cost extra (bigger pipe = bigger bill) but I won't be paying for that because I explicitly ordered the other, cheaper servers.

I got a mail from NSI informing me about a change in security policy. While transferring from iTool to Masset Steven said he would transfer my registration from NSI to Joker. So I was a bit surprised to still get mail from them. Of course registering at NSI means you pay for two years so reasonably enough I will stay registered at NSI until August 2001.

It's nice and warm so I wander into the garden ...

Calling inside the local telephone zone didn't require the zone number, you could add it but it was ignored most of the time. As of the first of July (ahum, today) it became mandatory. Anticipating the change I adapted the numbers in my phone book(s) and address list(s) some months ago. Of course I forgot to adapt the dialing number for my connection and I forgot that the change over would happen.
Result I spent more than an hour trouble shooting (and plugging the holes again) the modem and PC expecting some mysteriously (read Standard Windows behavior) changed settings. Exasperated I finally called the number using a handset.
To be greeted by a recording telling me to add the area code. Arrggggg.

Dry and clear (and 14°C) getting hot and sultry culminating into a some rain with lightning and thunder. But not convincing enough to call it a thunderstorm.

A bit warm for running, and no water cooling. My regular running shoes are getting worn out but I had a pair ready as replacement. They are the same size (43) but apparently just a bit shorter. When standing or walking that is hardly noticeable but after a few kilometer my toes start to hurt. When I get home I am definitively hobbling and after a shower I notice some toenails with reddish blue rings under them (and true blue by evening).
Which is rather uncomfortable.

Any one interested in blue, good as new, size 43 running shoes can come and get them.

Football, final

France - Italy : 0 - 1
A good match with Italy mostly defensive but not at all like they dug in against the Dutch. France was attacking more but couldn't break trough. The Italians did make their goal on one of their many counters.
I typed that at the end of the regular time. But before the actual end.
So, to spite me, the French, in the last minute of injury time, finally scored a goal while the Italians were already certain of winning. Leading in to extra time. The Italians were thoroughly dejected and the French, pressing their case scored the golden goal.
So final score :
France - Italy : 2 - 1
